The Legend of the Devourer of Worlds
by on 11/25/2024
The tiny Arborean nestled into his cozy bed of leaves, his wide eyes looking up at Old Nym.
“Grandma, tell me a story before I sleep,” he whispered.
“One of the Ancient Kings? Warriors? Lovers?” Old Nym replied.
“Ew, not lovers!” the little Arborean shook his head. “A Scary Story. Those are my favorites!”
"Oh, my sweet summer child… what do you know about Fear? Fear was the time of the Great Hunger. The Ancient Time, when He roamed the world. A long, endless night, where he devoured the trees, the stars, even the sun itself."
The baby Arborean’s eyes grew wide, but he held still, listening intently.
"Legend says he was taller than the biggest mountains, more ancient than the roots of the oldest trees. And his hunger was insatiable. He was destined to grow until he consumed our entire world until nothing was left but the void."
Old Nym leaned closer, her voice a low whisper.
"But worry not, my little dear... we Arboreans bound him with a powerful Seal, an old magic spell that secured him in eternal slumber, so he would never threaten our world again."
“Now sleep, little one. Nothing will hurt you.”
She tucked him in, her gaze lingering on the stars outside the window. The night felt peaceful, but as she stared into the dark forest, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something lingered in the air—something ancient, almost forgotten… and hungry.
